How to fix the 80240020 error when installing Windows 10
If you are one of the unlucky souls that ran into the error “Code 80240020” while trying to install Windows 10, it means that something in your Windows 10 installation folder is unfinished and/or corrupted. So how do you get around it?
Don’t fret yet though, here’s a way to fix it.
- Go into “C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download” and delete everything in that folder.
- Run the command prompt as an administrator. Type in “wuauclt.exe /updatenow”.
- Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start re-downloading from scratch.
If all goes well, you won’t have any issues when Windows 10 downloads again.
If it doesn’t work you can try going to the Microsoft website and downloading the Media Creation tool. It allows you to upgrade manually or make a flash drive to repair Windows 10 if something goes wrong during the update: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
I haven’t received the green light on my end to install Windows 10 yet, but I think I’m gonna hang on to it for a couple of months to see if any more errors and fixes come up during installation. I also haven’t finished doing an image of my SSD in case I have to go back to Windows 7.
