First look and nitpicking for DC Comics animated movie “The Death of Superman”
Based on the story which culminated in the bestseller graphic novel “The Death of Superman,” this is Warner Bros. second attempt at adapting that story after the not-so-well-received 2007 animated movie “Superman: Doomsday.”
Part 2 titled, “Reign of the Supermen” will be released in early 2019.
While it seems to be a lot closer to the comic book than the 2007 adaptation, I can’t help but wonder why they didn’t go for the Justice League International, which is the superhero team that was available at the time Superman fought Doomsday for the first time, instead of trying to use the regular Justice League and make them look incompetent against this threat.
The problem I have with using the regular league is that many fans, myself included, have this idea that, had the regular members of the Justice League been available (Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Martian Manhunter, Batman, The Flash), the outcome would have been much different, and Superman wouldn’t have had to die.
The Justice League at the time of Doomsday arrival was composed of Guy Gardner, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Maxima, Fire, Ice, and Bloodwynd. None of them, not even the Green Lantern was able to stop the creature from wreaking havoc, which is the reason why Superman ended up fighting toe to toe against that monster.
Hal Jordan wasn’t part of this story because he was in an even in outer space. He’s affected by some of the events in the next part, “Reign of the Supermen,” which starts a new chapter in Jordan’s life.
As for Cyborg, he didn’t become part of the League until 2011 as part of the New 52 relaunch, so having him in this story adds an extra heavy hitter that’s apparently also useless to help. In short, they seem to be trying to pull the same stunt they did when they killed Superman in “Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
I will give it a chance, but I just feel making the JL useless just to Superman can die is not the best course of action. I hope they at least leave Superman’s internal monologue intact.
